I recently won a pair of the top-of-the-line Rossignal X-ium World Cup Skate boots (picture below) that I can?t use and will sell at a deep discount (retail for $400, yours for $150) to any interested club member. They will fit any NNN binding system. I can swap the pair of boots I have (size 38.5) for any size you might need courtesy of the folks at Snow Mountain Ranch. I'll be up at Devil's Thumb this weekend coaching the USAFA Nordic Ski Team at some NCAA/citizen races (and as a result, unable to race/assist with State Champs), but can bring the boots with me this weekend and hand-deliver if anyone wants them. I just want to remind Saturday racers of a few things. The zero period will run from 10-10:45. The first racer in the first wave will start at 11:00. Do not expect these to be significantly delayed. You will NOT be directed to a point during the race, unless you are a non-rifle-carrying racer. It is up to you to select a point which has been reset properly and it set to the correct position. With any luck, we will be able to keep the right half of the range set to prone and the left half set to standing. This is standard procedure for an interval start race. I look forward to seeing racers and volunteers tomorrow. Thanks to all the participants and volunteers (and participants who also volunteered!) who helped make it a successful race weekend. Don't forget, we still have a race on the schedule for March 8, so stay sharp! And on that note, let me clear up a couple of misconceptions that were brought to my attention over the weekend... First, keep in mind that it's your responsibility as a competitor to know how many penalty loops you have to ski, and it's your responsibility to ski them. It is *not* the responsibility of the person recording penalty loops to personally assist you in keeping track of how many loops you've done. Do not ask them for this information, as they cannot give it to you. Also, please do not verbally abuse the penalty loop recorder when they decline to tell you how many loops you've skied. Approaches and attitudes of other CBC competition chiefs may vary from mine, but please be aware that if the penalty loop recorder (or any other volunteer, for that matter) reports to me, when I'm serving as Competition Chief, that they were subjected to any less-than-polite comments about how they're doing their job, I will ask for the bib number of the offending competitor and will assess at least a one minute penalty. That penalty will grow larger with successive infractions. I may be taking liberties with the official IBU penalty applications here, but at this point volunteers are much harder to find than competitors, and our ability to successfully host our local races is dependent upon all of our volunteer contributions. Secondly, we had several "teachable" moments regarding the cross-firing concept over the weekend. (What better way to learn than by doing, right?!) The notion that you get the "credit" for a hit if someone cross- fires on your target is an Urban Biathlon Legend. The only hits that are recorded for you are the ones accomplished by the bullets shot from the rifle in your own two hands. If someone is cross-firing on your target, they must be stopped immediately. Alert a range official to the situation. The shots that you've already taken (and their success or failure) will be recorded. Your target will be reset, and a time credit will be recorded for you if needed to offset the time spent resetting the target. If, on the other hand, nobody is on the points next to you and you're cross- firing without interfering with anyone, you will be allowed to continue. The rules don't require anyone to clue you in, but CBC practice is to let you know before you leave the range that you cross-fired, so that you know how many penalty loops to ski. Those numbers are on the posts and the targets for a reason -- use them! I'll step off my soapbox now. If you've read this far, hope it was educational. See you at the next race! First, though, we do have a fantastic group of folks involved here, both racing and volunteering. That's why many of us have stuck around as our interest in racing waxes and wanes. Keep it up! Second, the IBU does have what I termed the "bad attitude rule" when I first witnessed its application (no, not to me :-)). That allows broad leeway in sanctioning (including disqualification) competitors who are causing trouble for race officials. I would recommend against forcing Julia to look it up. One more teachable moment. If you come in to shoot offhand and you line up on a prone target by accident, the proper procedure is to put your rifle back on and ski back to an offhand target. Do not reset the prone target to offhand.
