Hi,

Results for the State Championships events of February 7 and 8 are
now posted on the web site (http://www.coloradobiathlon.org/results/).
Thanks to all the participants and volunteers (and participants who
also volunteered!) who helped make it a successful race weekend. Don't
forget, we still have a race on the schedule for March 8, so stay
sharp! And on that note, let me clear up a couple of misconceptions
that were brought to my attention over the weekend...

First, keep in mind that it's your responsibility as a competitor to
know how many penalty loops you have to ski, and it's your responsibility
to ski them. It is *not* the responsibility of the person recording
penalty loops to personally assist you in keeping track of how many
loops you've done. Do not ask them for this information, as they cannot
give it to you. Also, please do not verbally abuse the penalty loop
recorder when they decline to tell you how many loops you've skied.
Approaches and attitudes of other CBC competition chiefs may vary from
mine, but please be aware that if the penalty loop recorder (or any
other volunteer, for that matter) reports to me, when I'm serving as
Competition Chief, that they were subjected to any less-than-polite
comments about how they're doing their job, I will ask for the bib
number of the offending competitor and will assess at least a one minute
penalty. That penalty will grow larger with successive infractions. I
may be taking liberties with the official IBU penalty applications here,
but at this point volunteers are much harder to find than competitors,
and our ability to successfully host our local races is dependent upon
all of our volunteer contributions.

Secondly, we had several "teachable" moments regarding the cross-firing
concept over the weekend. (What better way to learn than by doing,
right?!) The notion that you get the "credit" for a hit if someone cross-
fires on your target is an Urban Biathlon Legend. The only hits that are
recorded for you are the ones accomplished by the bullets shot from the
rifle in your own two hands. If someone is cross-firing on your target,
they must be stopped immediately. Alert a range official to the situation.
The shots that you've already taken (and their success or failure) will
be recorded. Your target will be reset, and a time credit will be recorded
for you if needed to offset the time spent resetting the target. If, on
the other hand, nobody is on the points next to you and you're cross-
firing without interfering with anyone, you will be allowed to continue.
The rules don't require anyone to clue you in, but CBC practice is to
let you know before you leave the range that you cross-fired, so that
you know how many penalty loops to ski. Those numbers are on the posts
and the targets for a reason -- use them!

I'll step off my soapbox now. If you've read this far, hope it was
educational. See you at the next race!
