  Here are preliminary results for the adults in yesterday's sprint race. My
sincere apologies to the kids--I left their start list at the range

  Thanks to *all* of you who raced.  Those were the biggest fields I've ever
seen at a CBC event.  And double thanks to all of you who helped run the

Please note that I hit four targets the first bout, five the second, and none the third.  I had a total of 6 penalties, not 8.  Thanks very much.

Sorry I could not make yesterday's race - my son's (now inter-)national FIRST robotics competition started yesterday and trumped the CBC race.  It is six weeks until the big regional competition held at DU.  I look forward to the next competition I can make.

Subject: Biathlon Race This Weekend

Lander Biathlon Club will be hosting three ski biathlon races this
winter; the first one will be this Sunday, January 11th.  These races
are all about having fun and learning about the sport of biathlon;
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.  However, if you have not participated in a
Lander Biathlon Safety clinic, you must pre-register by emailing at
xc_ski at hotmail.com or calling 406-570-3031 and leaving a message that
you plan on participating in the safety clinic.

Lander Biathlon Club will provide rifles, as regulation rifles are
necessary.  At this point, we are unable to accommodate racers under
the age of 13, and anyone under the age of 18 must have a parent or
guardian present to sign their release form.

If you are not interested in racing, but want to see what biathlon is
all about, we can always use volunteers to help us with timing and
scoring, just shoot me an email.

  Here finally are results for the kids from the sprint race we held on
1/3/09.  My apologies again for the delay is distributing them (and my
sincere thanks to Bill who retrieved the results from their tupperware
entombment at the range).  Have a look and let me know if anything is amiss;
otherwise, we'll get these to the CBC webpage as soon as possible.

  And about those races, it looks like the race staff is coming together for
our Jan.  24, 25 weekend, but there are still gaps in our staffing schedule
for the state champs.  Let me know if anyone out there has a hankering for
some more volunteer time.

THEM UNATTENDED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!  Second, rifles should be in
their covers everywhere except at the range and on Phoebe and Meadows.
 Finally, be gracious to your fellow skiers who might wonder what you're
doing up there with a rifle.  I know the jokes can sometimes get a bit old,
but we should all be on our best behavior, now more than ever.

You can go crazy and register for all of our remaining events in one
sitting! Note that the registration for *both* of this weekend's events
closes on *Friday* at 3pm. You can also print out an entry form
(http://www.coloradobiathlon.org/forms/entry.pdf) and mail it to me,
or drop it off at my house (see address below), or simply have it
filled out and ready to go when you arrive at the range.

There's an option in the Active.com process to indicate that you have
volunteered for a Comp Chief or Range Chief position at one of the
2008-2009 Winter Events, which will give you your no-cost race entry
benefit. And if you haven't already committed to one of these positions,
and would like to take advantage of this fabulous opportunity, there
are still openings on the schedule. Those of us with some experience
in these roles will be around to guide you through the process.

"Mass Start Competition ? Germany's Kati Wilhelm scored her 19th World Cup victory after defeating Russia's Olga Medvedtseva in a tight duel on the final lap. She crossed the finishing line 5.8 seconds before her rival after beginning the lap 5.7 seconds behind the Russian. Helena Jonsson of Sweden finished third, 11.8 seconds behind Wilhelm, staying just ahead of a Magdalena Neuner, who again logged the fastest course time but had a total of five penalties.  The top three each missed two of their targets. 
Early in the race Darya Domracheva from Belarus had caused some excitement.  She cleaned her first prone session and just taken the lead before the leading group reentered the stadium for the second. As she went to lane one, she remained standing for the second prone session and fired away at the targets, unaware of the 29 other athletes behind her who were on the ground for prone. She had apparently confused the sequence with an individual race which alternates prone and standing."

I've had a couple of questions about the registration deadline(s) for
our events. For this weekend, the online registration opportunity ends
on Friday afternoon. We'll still take race-day registrations on both
Saturday and Sunday, at the range. Race-day registration is between
9:30 and 10:00am *at the range*.

Note that pre-registration is STRONGLY encouraged, either via Active.com
or by dropping off or mailing a registration to the Competition Chief or

While I'm on a "clarification" roll...our event formats this weekend
are a Mass Start on Saturday, and a modified Super Sprint on Sunday.
It's "modified" in the sense that we're only doing a "final" round, and
instead of being eliminated if you leave any targets standing, you just
ski penalty loops. You can find descriptions of all of the formats we
try to stick to at:

A caveat: We often don't have the staff support to set separate courses
for the 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, and 19-20 (junior women) age groups. Often
the course distances will diverge from what's on this chart, because the
age groups either get combined due to the small number of competitors,
or the youth and junior racers are lumped in with the women, etc.

Our goal is to enable participation by all. If you're concerned that
your skiing abilities won't allow you to complete a longer course, you
always have the opportunity to race a shorter course, just like you can
opt to not carry the rifle, etc.. Just talk to the Competition Chief
for that day so that he or she can make sure the timers and range
scorers know what's going on. You may not end up in the "official"
results, but you'll have the satisfaction of participating. I like to
think that that's worth something!

To all you racers who slogged through the wonderful conditions on Saturday -
boy, was that fun or what?  Sorry I couldn't join you for more fun today..
Hey, did anyone pick up or see an orange and gray Swix long sleeve shirt
and/or a red Craft (I think) zip-tee in the warning hut?  In my haste to get
out of my wet clothing after the race I took the two shirts off in the hut
and forgot to put them into my backpack!  If anyone picked them up please
let me know and I'll get them from you at the State Championship races.

2009 US Biathlon National Championships (Senior, Master, Junior categories) 
will be held in Ft Kent, ME .? Race dates will be March 19, 21, 22.?? This will also be NorAm # 10, so there will be Canadians competing.? We can can 
anticipate some Canadian masters competitors as well.

The North American Championships will be held in Valcartier, Quebec the following week, March 25-30.? Valcartier is about a 3hr drive from Ft Kent, and is 20 minutes outside of Quebec City.? Note that the Masters are 35+ and run a shortened 10Km Individual (Thursday)?and 6 Km Sprint (Saturday).

Hi Rob,
  Thanks for sharing the photos (and to Siga for taking them).  Thanks also
to the able crew who ran the weekend races--John H., Julia, Brian, Mary,
Kyle, and everyone else who stepped up on race day. As always we couldn't do
it without all the gracious volunteer support.  Finally, thanks to all of
you who raced and survived the semi-brutal race conditions.  Miles of smiles
(km of merriment for the fans of metric).

  Next up: another two race weekend for the state champs.  I have some leads
for chiefs on the Saturday sprint, but as of right now the crew is a bit
thin.  So let me know if any of you out there in CBC land feel like taking a
turn at the chief wheel.

Thank you everyone who organized, volunteered, set-up, supported, worked the
