You can also get to the registration directly at: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1836860 Remember that we only need your accurate year of birth in order to put you in the right category, so you can put whatever you want in the month and day fields if you don't like sprinkling that information all about the Web. Preregistration is *strongly* encouraged. If pre-registration doesn't work for you, then please drop me an e-mail and let me know which day(s) you plan to compete, along with your year of birth and any requests you have for a club .22 or pellet rifle. Or better yet, just pre-register at active.com. Did I mention that pre-registration is recommended? :-) If you do decide to register at the range, be aware that registration CLOSES at 10am each day. I hope to see all of your pre-registered selves at the range this weekend! They live in Fraser off County Road 8. The address is 436 Mulligan and John says that the mapquest directions are accurate. We will make a basic pasta, red sauce, salad, veggie meal so that people without kitchen access could perhaps just bring a beverage or dessert. Would you please RSVP so that I can get a headcount? To summarize: 6 pm 436 Mulligan, Fraser CO 80442 Cell coverage is spotty but you can try John at 720-352-3124 if you need any more details. Anything just left on the range long term will certainly be destroyed. However, if we had a little cart or something, then it could be locked up except when someone with a combo were there to unlock it. Could be one of a handful of members (I did finally get in, as did Steve Niessner) or perhaps during public days. I can float it with the necessary club officers if there is interest. Go to to your local Dick's Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, or yard sale?and?buy a pellet gun off the shelf.?Look for one that has a similar weight to a biathlon rifle; probably wood stock (opposed to plastic).?Accuracy--compared to a $1200 Anschutz--of the gun will be questionable in the lower price range. However, the important thing for practicing in your basement is to get your "systems" established: stability, breathing,?squeezing the trigger, and consistent groups. You can always add a little?wood block to the bottom of the stock to simulate?a biathlon rifle stock. Get a trap to catch the pellets (~$35). I have a "break barrel" that forces me to?load each round individually. I paid $99 for it on sale at Gender Mountain. I use Dirty Bird?splatter targets because it is easy to see?where the pellets strike.?They come with five?small targets on a single sheet. Cut out?a single target and?tape it to a paper plate or pirce of cardboard to?center it and hang it on the trap clip. When I first did this, I shot diagonally across my basement and had about 30 feet from my?washing machine to the trap.? rudy ?******************************** think snow, but keep riding your bicycle ________________________________ From: Paul Searcy To: cbcmembers at juliacollins.us Sent: Sat, February 20, 2010 9:02:47 AM Subject: [CBCmembers] Air rifle for training Apologies for sending to the whole list.?? But if you're just interested in learning more about the sport, come out and watch a race. Our last race of the season will be held at Snow Mountain Ranch on Saturday March 13. Schedule and details will soon follow (and they will be posted on our web page, www.coloradobiathlon.org). We will always welcome volunteers to help run the events (and there are many positions that can be staffed with little or no actual race experience), but we have lots of cow bells too if you just want to watch and cheer. For an e-introduction, if you have been assimilated by the Comcast machine, you can watch re-runs of all of the Olympic biathlon races to date on-line at NBC.com (follow the links to the Olympic video section). The reruns include "encore" presentations of the races NBC actually covered with commentary plus full replays of the raw, un-commentated Olympic TV feed (cool to watch, but perhaps less educational). I'd also recommend a visit to www.biathlonworld.com or www.usbiathlon.org. It's been great to be connected w/ CBC and the exposure to biathlon. By all means come out to ski at Snow Mt Ranch on Mar 13 and check out our race while you're there. It sounds like you both may be novice freestyle skiers; I suggest you consider a skate lesson. My experience endorses the conventional wisdom that skate skiing is easy to do but not so easy to do fast and silky; might as well get started from a proper base. I think biathlon is one of those things that if you're attracted to it you're probably going to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. I was attracted to it and encouraged toward it by a couple friends who were already members of the cult. I jumped in with both feet and have never second guessed the decision, even when I've felt like hurling (Oops - - should stay positive in front of newbies; did I say that hurling part out loud?). If you happen to be skiing this Saturday at SMR, I plan on being out there. I'd be happy to show you the range and a couple of our common racing loops. Let me know. Perhaps an experienced biathlete could give us some tips? Not sure how all this would work, of if there is any interest. If I don't make it to a race this season, I hope to do a summer event, and would like to get sorted out for the next ski season, so I would love to have people to train with over the next year. Given my schedule for the next three months, I won't be able to remedy it until next winter. But I know something about shooting. Biathlon shooting is pretty sophisticated skill, but one leg of it is the act of shooting a rifle. To that end, I commend to you the Appleseed Project. It's a clinic to teach basic rifle skills to anyone interested in learning. They hold classes all over the country. They get into the history and the tradition of America as a nation of riflemen, but don't think they're a bunch of revolutionaries. They're mainstream -- they even trained a battalion of the South Carolina National Guard. The commander did not feel that his troops had received adequate rifle training and he reached out to the civilians. On another note, you can configure your email delivery as a digest option, so that you only receive one email a day (on those days when there happens to be more than one message). Also, note that all messages from our list are identified with "[CBCmembers]" in the subject line. The delete key works as well on CBC email items as it does for any other. On a final note, the email list is intended to be a communication mechanism amongst all CBC members. As far as I can tell, it is fulfilling that purpose. No need to set up the Ning option as Ed suggested, since the mailing list is designed to fill the same need. If you decide not to subscribe to the e-mail list, please pay attention to the web site for updates to the schedule. We do not have a mechanism in place to individually notify members when new events are added, schedules change, etc. Thanks, Julia From bill at snowcafe.com Wed Feb 24 11:05:49 2010 From: bill at snowcafe.com (Bill Rode) Date: Wed, 24 Feb 2010 12:05:49 -0700 Subject: [CBCmembers] CBC E-Mail Nightmare. At the close of this email, let's take this subject off of the regular CBC email grid, at least for now. Any who would like to be part of the discussion and party, email me directly (dean at VantageXP.com) without copy to the CBCmembers address. We can build an ad-hoc email group just to get this meeting idea done. CBC officers or other members are of course encouraged to hop in if they'd like. I feel I should make one point absolutely clear at the outset. I don't know what the status of each of the prospective biathletes is, but it is important to know that no one is permitted to discharge a firearm at the CBC range who has not passed the requisite rifle safety certification or is under the direct supervision of a CBC qualified rifle safety instructor (which by the way, I am not). Seems to me our gathering should be held at Snow Mt Ranch since that's where the club is focused; that's where the competition range is, and that's where the competition trails are. My schedule is such that 2/27, 3/7, 3/13 or 3/14 are dates from which we could select a day to meet. March 13 is our remaining CBC biathlon of the season and would be a good opportunity accomplish the things we've noted already, and to check out a live CBC race. Except for the 13th, I would suggest meeting at the SMR Nordic Center by 10:30 or 11:00am. That allows us to spend a little time together on the snow and time b4 and/or after to spend as we wish. If we go the 13th, we might be able to accomplish things while the race program is in progress, or immediately thereafter. I apologize for using "I" and "my" to excess; I (oops) think the idea of getting a little closer to biathlon is a great idea as you consider your commitment. So, let's hear from you. I'm not sure how we would ask someone to help us out given the emailing 'nightmare' that has ensued recently, or who else we could ask, but just tossing this out there as an idea. Just for logistics, I'm in Denver, but have been skiing on the USFS trails outside of Eldora, so would be willing to meet up wherever. If you're all around this weekend and wouldn't mind trying to track down someone to train with us that would be great.
