This is quite a bunch coming out of the woodwork and includes me. I had hoped to get going this season but so far work and other commitments have nixed that. I downhill and AT ski and love Nordic skiing but have never skate skied. I enjoy the precision of shooting and my son is training at the Olympic Training Center in their youth development program. I'm definitely interested in any group sessions/networking this season and certainly summer events and training would be great. On my son's end I'm sure he'd enjoy getting together with other kids in the sport near his age - 12. He's also a competitive soccer player.

Like the other posters, I am a bit unsure about how the whole sport works, and how to prepare for a competition. Would there be any interest in having the people new to the sport get together, or correspond via e-mail, and try to set up some training sessions or informational sessions? Perhaps an experienced biathlete could give us some tips? Not sure how all this would work, of if there is any interest. If I don't make it to a race this season, I hope to do a summer event, and would like to get sorted out for the next ski season, so I would love to have people to train with over the next year.

By all means come out to ski at Snow Mt Ranch on Mar 13 and check out our race while you’re there. It sounds like you both may be novice freestyle skiers; I suggest you consider a skate lesson. My experience endorses the conventional wisdom that skate skiing is easy to do but not so easy to do fast and silky; might as well get started from a proper base.

I was attracted to it and encouraged toward it by a couple friends who were already members of the cult. I jumped in with both feet and have never second guessed the decision, even when I’ve felt like hurling (Oops - - should stay positive in front of newbies; did I say that hurling part out loud?).

Our last race of the season will be held at Snow Mountain Ranch on Saturday March 13. Schedule and details will soon follow (and they will be posted on our web page,www.coloradobiathlon.org). We will always welcome volunteers to help run the events (and there are many positions that can be staffed with little or no actual race experience), but we have lots of cow bells too if you just want to watch and cheer.

The reruns include "encore" presentations of the races NBC actually covered with commentary plus full replays of the raw, un-commentated Olympic TV feed (cool to watch, but perhaps less educational). I'd also recommend a visit to www.biathlonworld.com or www.usbiathlon.org.

What would you recommend as a first step to facilitating this goal, I've contacted Elizabeth Pike re: a safety certification clinic but wanted to see if there was anything else I could do, (i.e., attend your next race as a spectator, volunteer etc...)?
